Martin Kemp was originally the roadie for the band, but Steve Dagger noticed that he was developing a following of his own and suggested that it might be an idea to get him on board. After protests from Gary that he would have to look after him, his big brother relented, gave him a crash course in bass guitar and Martin joined the band.
After Spandau split Martin went back to his
acting career and starred in quite a few American B Movies. He also starred as
The Devil in Faye Weldon’s Growing Rich which was shown on ITV in the mid
1990’s. Things became serious for Martin when after complaining about the
headaches which were becoming worse doctors discovered a tumor on Martin’s
brain.
The operations were a success and as you can see he has made a full recovery. He returned to acting guest starring in The Bill and a Linda La Plante thriller before becoming the most high profile former member of Spandau Ballet, when he became a cast member of Eastenders in 1998. He regularly appeared on our TV screens as "bad boy" Steve Owen. Owen was killed off in a dramatic car crash in March 2002 and he has now signed a lucrative contract with ITV. His first projects are a two-part thriller called "Daddy's Girl" and a 6-part police drama called "Serious and Organised". Martin has also written an autobiography entitled "True"
